Finishes That Survive Coastal Air

The Air Is the Variable

Humidity alone is manageable. Humidity carrying salt is not, because chloride keeps a corrosion cell working long after a surface has dried and it penetrates coatings that would otherwise hold. Properties closer to the bay see this plainly, and a finish specification that would be generous a hundred miles inland is merely adequate here.

Galvanise First, Then Coat

The specification that consistently outperforms in this environment is hot dip galvanising with a coating over the top. The zinc protects the steel electrochemically even where the top coat is scratched, which is precisely the failure mode that kills a single layer finish. It costs more at fabrication and it removes the entire class of problems where a stone chip becomes a rust bloom.

If Galvanising Is Not on the Table

The next best thing is a properly prepared multi coat system: blast to bare metal, a zinc rich primer, then the finish coats. The critical part is the preparation. A finish applied over mill scale or over remaining corrosion will fail on schedule no matter how good the topcoat is, and preparation is the line most often quietly reduced to make a quote competitive.

Ornamental Detail Needs Attention

Coatings thin at edges and build in crevices, so a leaf covered in scrolls and spear tops has dozens of thin spots and dozens of traps. On decorative work it is worth asking specifically how the recesses behind collars and inside scroll curls are treated, because those are the places that begin corroding first and the places nobody inspects.

Colour Choices Are Practical Too

Dark colours run hot in full sun, and thermal cycling stresses the bond between coating and steel over years. It is a second order effect and not a reason to avoid black, which remains the standard for good reasons, but it is one more argument for the galvanised layer underneath doing the real protective work rather than the paint.

Maintenance Is a Wash and a Look

Rinsing salt deposits off a gate a few times a year, particularly at the bottom of the leaf where spray collects, does more for the finish than any product sold for the purpose. Combine it with a slow look along every edge and every weld, and touch in what you find. A chip attended to within weeks stays a chip; the same chip after two seasons is a repair.
