Gauge Is Not a Dimension
Gauge is an old sheet numbering system where a bigger number means thinner metal, and the actual thickness depends on the material. Sixteen gauge steel is around sixty thousandths of an inch, fourteen around eighty. Asking for a wall in thousandths removes the ambiguity, and any real supplier answers that question directly.
Where the Wall Matters Most
The perimeter frame carries the load and wants the heavier wall. Infill pickets carry almost nothing and can be lighter without affecting stiffness. Spending the budget on a heavy frame and a light infill produces a better gate than spreading the same weight evenly through both.
Thin Wall and Corrosion
A thin section has less metal to lose before it perforates. On a coast where the inside of a tube stays damp, the same rate of internal rust that a heavy wall shrugs off for twenty years will open a light wall in eight. Wall thickness is a durability decision as much as a structural one.
Welding Thin Sections
Thin wall burns through easily, so the fabricator drops the heat and speeds the travel, which is exactly the condition that produces a bead sitting on the surface without fusing. A gate in light section often has weaker joints as well as weaker members, and the two faults compound.
What to Ask For
Frame section and wall in decimals, picket section, and whether the tubing is welded seam or seamless. Then ask where the drainage holes go. A supplier who answers all four without hesitating is quoting a specification, and one who talks only about the pattern is quoting a picture.
Weight as a Cross Check
A finished leaf can be weighed, and the figure either agrees with the sections quoted or it does not. On a gate that is going to be automated the weight has to be known anyway for the operator, so asking for it early costs nothing and quietly confirms the specification. A leaf coming in well under the calculated figure was built from lighter material than the paperwork says.
